Bath Series G

The House Pottery in the Garden

This is a relatively new venture for The House Pottery brought about as a result of the interest shown by gardeners in using our pots in the garden and for house plants. A number of the early Bath Series pots were purchased to be planted up and displayed indoors and out. We make pots suitable for outdoor use but please click on the following link to read information about frost resistance (Are they frost resistant?) Pots produced for growing plants are made both with and without drainage holes in the base ( see individual pot descriptions). We can also make pots to order and you may like to browse The House Pottery Catalogue to see the wide range of possibilities. Enquiries can be made to: 2ianb@thehousepottery.com

Bath Series G

Bath Series G (above) was made using buff clay and hand finished with an oxide/carbonate wash and vitrifying colours fired to 1180 degrees. This gives the piece its attractive colouring. It is 20 cm high and one of Ian's 'Bath series'. A design inspired by his time as a student at Bath Academy of Art, England and the wonderful Georgian terraces of that city. An excellent example of his work reflecting the artist's fascination with old buildings.

The pot is 11cm high x 23cm square and made from Earthstone Smooth Textured Crank clay. Finished with an oxide /carbonate wash and handpainted with vitrifying colours. Fired to 1120 degrees.

A final firing to 1120 degrees should give this planter some resistance to frost damage. However, the detail on this pot will make it more susceptible to water remaining in the crevices, etc and subsequently freezing than other designs we make. Garden Planters or House Plant Pots?

Pots in the Gardener's Gallery are designed primarily as planters for use indoors or outside in the garden. You decide what you would like to use them for. They can be supplied with or without a drainage hole in the base.

Are they frost resistant?

We would expect these pots to be fine in all but the most severe of cold weather conditions. They are fired to a high temperature meaning that the water absorbency rate is relatively low. It is freezing water within the body of the pot that causes the damage. We would hesitate to describe any ceramic plant pot as 100% frost resistant and would always advise you to bring inside the most precious of your planters during very low temperature, severe weather.
