Why 'The House Pottery?

We decided upon calling it 'The House Pottery' mainly for the obvious reason that the pottery makes house pots. However, it is also true to say that the pottery is our house or to be strictly accurate, our garage. Yet another garage that never sees a car inside it! I guess you could call it a modern day cottage industry.

Starting out.

Pottery, unlike art using most other mediums, is quite expensive to set up. Clay and the basic materials are still for the most part at an affordable price but kilns remain a major expenditure. Most of Ian's work and plans for new pieces are made using handbuilding techniques so we have no potter's wheel at present. However, Ian hopes that the day will not be too far distant when we can acquire one of those too.

Our Kiln

The kiln is not in fact the model Ian intended to buy but one that was offered as an alternative because the first choice was going to take an age to arrive. However, this kiln has proved to be really good, very reliable and more sophisticated than the model we initially had in mind. It cost a little more but has proved to have been a very good buy. The controller is especially good for this price range allowing detailed firing sequences to be programmed. If you are looking for a 'starting out' kiln at a reasonable price do contact us and we will be glad to give you more information. enquiries@thehousepottery.com
